Biological Repression
One member of the MCLA class of 2015 has been posting on various social networking sites that he is fasting from food for entire days. He has also been posting that he is an ex-bisexual (which is awkward because sexual orientation is not a choice, and he is making it appear as though it is), which seems strange given that most of his posts are about sex, which leads many to think that he is constantly thinking about sex. He is also, apparently, neglecting education, he has said a few times that he could care less about education over God. At any rate, he thinks that fasting/abstaining/neglecting from these things will help him to grow spiritually. I disagree with him, and instead agree with the Buddha. I think that you can only work on spirituality when you are not repressing your basic biological needs. The sexual repression, it seems, is especially leading to interference with spirituality with him. Given that at least 80% of his posts are about sex, and not about god, it's apparent that repressed sexuality is hogging up most of his thoughts. There is also the fact that sexual repression and fasting can have severely negative affects on a person's health. I hope that, if there is indeed a god, he is not the kind of god who supports sexual repression, starvation, and depriving oneself of knowledge just for him.

Interesting application of Buddhist principles. Analysis aside, though, it sounds like what this person most needs right now is compassion.
ReplyDeleteI agree; I think he needs that and some kind of therapy if it would be effective. Honestly, this individual has reached a point where he is convinced that everyone has sins and that, in order to be the best Christian he can be, he cannot associate with people who don't have his views. He has stated a few times now that he could care less about friends because he has god's company. It is largely important to note that he is convinced that a life of friendship that doesn't revolve around god, is going to lead him to sin and death. He also has posted many things akin to "I want to step on my enemies foreheads to bring myself closer to god."
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as though this person does need some compassion and guidance. Most religions - paradoxically, perhaps - emphasize that divinity is not separate from society. Cutting oneself off from people with different beliefs, or "stepping on your enemies' foreheads" expresses the least transcendent aspects of religion.
ReplyDeleteDo Christian's have any spiritual practices available to them besides prayer, celebrating mass, and applying the moral teachings of their faith? The entire point of Buddhism is the path, the metaphysical stuff comes second to that. In Christianity it seems like you affirm your beliefs and are done with it. Fasting seems more like a physical act of self hatred of the body, and I don't quite understand what that has to do with Jesus' message. Maybe this acquaintance of yours is trying to achieve union with Brahma through self denial?
